Traction

A Poetry Reading by Mary Makofske

Wednesday, April 25th, 7 PM

in the 2nd Floor Community Room at Thrall

Mary Makofske will read and discuss poems from her newest book, Traction, on Wednesday, April 25 at 7 p.m. at Thrall Public Library. There will be time for questions and answers after the reading. Traction, winner of the Snyder Prize, was published in 2011 by Ashland Poetry Press.

Makofske retired from Orange County Community College in 2006. She has taught literature, Freshman English, writing skills, and creative writing and is the author of three books of poetry. She has led book discussions at the Thrall, Wisner, Chester, Moffit, Woodbury, Newburgh, Ellenville, and Goshen libraries.

Marge Piercy praised Traction as "a collection... that repays attention. Makofske ranges widely from moving meditations on prehistory to an homage to Walt Whitman, love poems, family poems, poems about nature, mortality, and growing up in the fifties. These poems are not just for the eye but sound in the ear."

Kofi & Sankofa

African Drum

& Dance Ensemble

Sunday, February 26, 2012, 2 PM

at Middletown Thrall Library
in the 2nd Floor Community Room

Sankofa consists of four drummers and three dancers led by Kofi (an Asante prince from Ghana) and Yacin (a Wollof princess from Senegal).

Sankofa, which means "going back to the roots" in the Twi language from Ghana, West Africa, is very symbolic in promoting personal and community awareness of the positive role of the arts in the villages in West Africa. This positivity is demonstrated and preserved through the rich cultural values passed on to us by our great ancestors, the Nananom.

Kofi & Sankofa, originally formed in the summer of 1997 from community drum circles in Allentown and Stroudsburg Pennsylvania, teaches togetherness in diversity and empowerment of the individual self-image as well as community building and teamwork through African drumming and dance.

Our performances generate a community spirit of sharing, oneness, joy and love, where everyone gets involved.

This event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served. For more information about the performer, please visit www.bak2roots.com.
