The World Wide Web

The most popular area of the Internet is the World Wide Web, the area where web sites and web pages are stored.

Web sites contain web pages. Web pages are pages of information which you view through a program called a web browser. This page you are viewing is a web page. Web pages can contain hyperlinks, which are words or pictures you can click on for more information.

There are millions of web sites in existence, with thousands appearing and disappearing daily. People create these web sites. A popular term for a person in charge of a web site is "webmaster."

Webmasters use a variety of technologies to create and maintain web sites. The most important language a webmaster must learn is HTML, which stands for Hypertext Markup Language. This special language allows a webmaster to format text and pictures and link to other pages and web sites.

It is through all of these hyperlinks that we arrive at the notion of the World Wide Web: if we were to draw lines connecting all web sites our finished drawing would resemble a spider's web.
