The Power of Words
A Free Workshop
August 19, 2014, 6:30 - 8 PM
in the 2nd Floor Community Room at Middletown Thrall Library
Do words have power? Or is it just the energy behind the words that have power?
One might say words have no power at all, because it's just words. If that's true, then why do people use words to manipulate, hurt, tear down, express love, or praise? Words can affect us based on our experiences, our understanding, and how we use them.
For some, certain words can be a trigger that can set off a chemical reaction of anger, fight or flight, peace, fear, and even love, which in turn can affect us in our daily lives, even our health.
The Power of Words is a course designed to create an introspection of self using words. "It's not what you say, but how you say it." Or is it?
About the Presenter: Kohloa is a native New Yorker with a BA degree in Education History/Social Studies from the University of Hartford. She has worked as an educator for over ten years with children as well as adults of different ages and backgrounds. Kohloa grew up with teachings of higher concepts and how important it is to do self introspections. In turn, this lead her to create the workshop The Power of Words.
In addition to being an educator she is also an artist, designer, and a writer of different genres, predominately poetry. Writing is one of Kohloa's greatest passions in life to the point where she started her own writers group to encourage and enhance others to live their passion and further tap into their own creative ability. One can find some of her work and writings on her self-designed website:
www.zeekohkreations.com

Remarkable Reads
Our May 2014 book discussion will be...
Wednesday, May 28, 2014, 6:30 PM
in the 2nd Floor Community Room at Middletown Thrall Library
Publisher's description: "A gripping vision of our society radically overturned by a theocratic revolution, Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale has become one of the most powerful and most widely read novels of our time. Offred is a Handmaid in the Republic of Gilead, serving in the household of the enigmatic Commander and his bitter wife. She may go out once a day to markets whose signs are now pictures because women are not allowed to read. She must pray that the Commander makes her pregnant, for in a time of declining birthrates her value lies in her fertility, and failure means exile to the dangerously polluted Colonies. Offred can remember a time when she lived with her husband and daughter and had a job, before she lost even her own name. Now she navigates the intimate secrets of those who control her every move, risking her life in breaking the rules. Like Aldous Huxley's Brave New World and George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four, The Handmaid's Tale has endured not only as a literary landmark but as a warning of a possible future that is still chillingly relevant."
Copies are now available at the Library's Circulation Desk.
This event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.

Succeeding without Labels
Lessons for Educators
A Book Signing Event
January 30, 2014, 4 - 6 PM
in the 2nd Floor Community Room at Middletown Thrall Library
Meet Dr. Jonathan Jefferson as he present and sign his new book, Mugamore, Succeeding without Labels: Lessons for Educators.
After earning his doctorate from Seton Hall University in 2006 in the area of education leadership, management, and policy, he is now a public school administrator. Dr. Jefferson was also the Athletic Director in the Middletown School District from November 2002 through April 2005.
About the book: "This book was developed to compare the real life educational experiences of an average child during the last generation in which the United States led the world in education to a real child's experiences today (when the United States is no longer in the top 20). The practice of labeling students with a disability has reached the status of a dangerous standard practice. Increasing demands for educational accountability will lead to more students being labeled and left behind. Written from a unique in-depth child's point-of-view, this book is designed to trigger a paradigm shift from automatically labeling children to patiently allowing them to grow into themselves. The author compares common disabilities chapter-by-chapter in sync with the child's intentions (or lack thereof). This sharing of the educational lives of two children, coupled with peer reviewed literature and research, provides powerful motivation for change."

Book Discussion Series:
Remarkable Reads
Our January 2014 book discussion will be...
Freedom by Jonathan Franzen
Wednesday, January 29th, 6:30 PM
in the 2nd Floor Community Room at Middletown Thrall Library
This controversial best seller traces the arc of a family from the 1970's - 2000's.
Oprah Winfrey has described the book as a "masterpiece," and
Time Magazine has described Franzen as a "Great American Novelist,"
while others, like fellow authors Jodi Picoult and Jennifer Weiner, believe that
the praise
Freedom and Franzen have received indicates that there
is a double standard in the media in which men who write about family issues
are hailed as important while women writing about the same subjects are
discredited, described as "chick-lit," and not reviewed as favorably.
Read the book, come to the discussion and decide for yourself!
Copies are now available at the Library's Circulation Desk.
This event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.
