Pirate School: Sea Dreams!

Join the briny buccaneers of yore! Led by the bumbling pirate professor, Billy Bones. Pirate School: Sea Dreams! is fast paced, interactive and engaging! This is a show you don't want to miss!

Door Open at: 3:50 pm. Show Time: 4:00 pm (45 to 60 minutes)

This is a family event! Registration starts on Monday, July 10th.

About the Performer: "David respects the instincts of his audiences and intuitively connects with kids in fundamental ways. Because children crave to be part of the action, all of Mr. Engel's shows harken back to outdoor play (remember that?) and feature immersive full-audience active participation. Parents and educators especially appreciate the wholesome, inclusive, nonviolent content and pro-social messaging subtly woven throughout his shows. Mr. Engel is an actor with years of stage and screen experience, which brings an added depth to his clown work. He has performed major Shakespearean roles (Hamlet, Macbeth, Titus Andronicus, etc.) and has appeared in commercials, film and television. Youth Services will offer teens free cooking classes, and AIM (Adult Identity Mentoring) workshops.

AIM teaches life-planning skills, such as looking ahead to the future!

We'll have special guest speakers and more!

Open to teens (13 to 18 years old).

AIM sessions will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays starting Wednesday, July 5, 2023.

African American History & Culture
Book Challenge

Our Youth Services Department is turning the spotlight on the 2023 African American History & Culture Book Challenge. Here's what you need to know:

1. We encourage you to borrow books and magazines from Middletown Thrall Library or if you have books at home or school about African Americans, African American history or culture you can use what you have. The goal of this activity is to challenge yourself to learn about the African American Experience and win the challenge!
2. You must log what you read with the following: Name of the book, author, and brief summary of what you read and what YOU learned from reading this book and/or magazine article(s). Handwritten reading logs must be legible. Each book or magazine entry must be numbered Reading logs can also be typewritten (Google docs, Word, etc.). Include your name, and school.
3. This event is for ages 6 through 18. No registration is required.
4. ALL reading logs must be submitted by Wednesday March 1, 2023. Winner will be announced on Friday March 3.
5. Winner will receive bragging rights and a $20.00 Barnes and Noble gift card.

Operation Warm UPDATE

January 2023

On Saturday, November 19, 2022, IATSE (International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees) partnered with Middletown Thrall Library Youth Services Department for OPERATION WARM.

OPERATION WARM was a huge success!

Many families received NEW coats, NEW hats, and a gift certificate for the Middletown Thrall library Used Bookstore for their children, ALL FOR FREE!

If you were not able to register for OPERATION WARM on November 19, 2022, now is the time to get a FREE coat for your child/children.

Here is what you need to know:

• The coat sizes listed below are what is available. Please note we have a very limited amount of coats. Coats are given on a first-come-first-served basis:
  • Girl sizes: 7/8, 10/12, 14/16
  • Boy Sizes: 5/6, 10/12, 14/16
  • Unisex Large & Extra Large (large size coats are available ONLY for students in service areas).
• Participants (Parent, child, caregiver) must have an ACTIVE MIDDLETOWN THRALL LIBRARY card to register. Call youth services at (845) 341-5470 to register. Have your library card available at the time of registration.
  
  One card per family. If you registered and received a coat for your child or children November 19, you are not eligible to register.
• At the time of registration you will select a day and time you will be able to pick- up your child/children's coat(s). Child /children do not need to be present for coat pick-up. Coat pick-up is on the 2nd floor in the children's room.
• Coats are available for ages 3 years old through 18 years old in our service area.

The NEW coats and Gift certificates are provided through the generosity of IATSE (International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees).

Operation Warm!

"More than a Warm Coat"

Saturday, Dec. 2, 2023

in our Story Time Room

IATSE (International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees) Local 311 has partnered with Operation Warm to provide 200 NEW warm coats to kids in our community!

Here's what you need to know:

1. Participants (parent, child,caregiver) must have an ACTIVE MIDDLETOWN THRALL LIBRARY card to register.

Participants can register in-person or call Youth Services at 1-845-341-5470 during library hours. At the time of registration, you must provide your children's coast sizes. PLEASE NOTE: Coat sizes run small. Coats will be purchased based on YOUR child's coat size. Coats CANNOT BE EXCHANGED FOR SMALLER OR LARGER SIZES.

2. One card per family can be used to register (limit 4 coats per family).

At the time of registration you will select a time slot for your child or children to pick up their new coat and new hat on Saturday, December 2, 2023.

3. Registration begins on Monday, Oct. 16, 2023 and ends on Sunday, November 12th. Each registered child will receive a new warm coat thanks to (IATSE) Local 311.

4. Coats are available for ages 4 years old through 17 years old or 12th grade.

Thanks to the community of Knitters and Crocheters who crafted beautiful warm hats to accompany new warm coats.

The first 55 registered participants will receive a gift certificate to the Friends of Thrall Bookstore! Gift certificates will be distributed during coat pick up.

This show blends rich language with expert storytelling to produce a rich language arts experience for middle grades. Stories include The Tell-Tale Heart, The Raven, The Bells and more!

Youth Services Display Board



Family Night with a Life-Sized CLUE. This event was a role-playing version of the classic mystery game. Participants were able to dress up in costumes and use props to solve a mystery of Whodunit.



Build Your Own Farm Animals. Preschoolers learned about farm animals. Each participant stuffed their very own farm animal to care for and love.

"More than a Warm Coat"

Taking place on Saturday, November 19, 2022

IATSE (International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees) Local 311 has partnered with Operation Warm to provide 200 NEW warm coats to kids in our community!

Here's what you need to know:

1. Participants (Parent, child, caregiver) must have an ACTIVE MIDDLETOWN THRALL LIBRARY card to register.

One card per family can be used to register (limit 4 coats per family).

At the time of registration you will select a time for your child or children to shop for a warm new coat. ALL COATS MUST BE PICKED UP AT THE TIME OF YOUR APPOINTMENT!

On the day of the event, all registered children MUST be present to shop for his or her coat. No exceptions.

2. Registration begins on Tuesday, Nov. 1, 2022. Each registered child will receive a new warm coat thanks to (IATSE) Local 311.

3. Coats are available for students in grades Kindergarten through 12th grade.

Thanks to the community of knitters and crocheters who are working hard to knit and crochet hats for registered participants!

Operation Warm

Mondays, 2 - 5:30 pm

The primary goal of "OPERATION WARM" is to provide new warm coats to kids in our community.

Our Youth Services Department is in search of Knitters and crocheters who are willing to knit or crochet hats for kids.

Our goal is to provide 200 kids in our Community with a warm hat! Please join us as we "Sit, Sip & Knit/Crochet" hats for kids!

Sit, Sip & Knit /Crochet will meet on the following Mondays (2 pm - 5:30 pm) in our 2nd floor Story Time Room at Middletown Thrall Library:

• October 24
• November 7

If you have your own pattern to work from, great! If not, we can provide you with a free knit or crochet pattern.

If you have your own yarn, awesome! If not, we have our very own MTL stash!

We got you covered: we'll provide the sip and a chance to gather and make new friends! This is a wonderful opportunity to donate your talents for a great cause!

• Story Time Adventures!

  Story Time Adventures focus on literacy: phonological awareness, letter knowledge, print awareness and the skills needed to help your child become a successful reader!
  Wednesdays: September 21, 28, October 5, 12. For ages: 3-5
  Time 10:30 am - 11:00 am
  Registration is required. Registration begins on Tuesday September 6. Space is limited.

• Homework Help!

  Homework Help will be available:
  Tuesdays & Thursdays, 4:00 pm - 7:00 pm starting September 20, 2022
  This program operates on a first-come-first-serve basis. Each student is entitled to half hour session. There will be not Homework Help when either the Middletown School District or the Pine Bush School District is CLOSED, or when after-school activities are canceled.

• Traveling Lantern Theatre Company Presents
  The Industrious Mr. Franklin

  "Lightning, Wit and Statesmanship!" Meet the intrepid inventor, quipping author, productive scientist, and founding father: Mr. Benjamin Franklin. You'll travel with him, meet his friends, help him in is work and learn all about the courageous and diligent man who tamed electricity with a kite and a key.
  This new play is a fascinating and humorous romp with one of America's most endearing historical characters."

• Halloween is in the Air!

  Come dressed in your favorite costume as we share some of our favorite Halloween tales and kick off our very own 2022 Halloween Parade in the Middletown Thrall Library. For ages: 3-5.

• Crochet & Knitting Workshops:
  Individualized Instruction!

  Have you ever dreamed of learning how to crochet or knit? If so, register for your FREE workshops! You can learn with one-on-one half hour sessions. Registration is required.

• Traveling Lantern Theatre Company Presents
  The Story of Ebenezer Scrooge

  The Story of Ebenezer Scrooge, or "A Christmas Carol"
  "The Classic tale of a miser's redemption. Ebenezer Scrooge is a nasty, mean, snarling old geezer with no care for anything other than his money. His one and only friend visits him as a ghost, and starts him on a journey that melts his icy heart and teaches him the joys of caring for, and giving to others.

• Zippy the Snowman!

  Kick off the holidays with Zippy the Snowman! Participants will receive a FREE 15 inch Zippy the Snowman. Zippy the Snowman comes with a birth certificate, instructions, stuffing, and a travel bag.
  What you need to know: This is a Pick-Up Craft
  1. This activity is open to ages 3 through 12. Please call (845) 341-5470 to register. You will need an active library card to borrow age appropriate Holiday themed materials from our children's collection.
  2. Choose a day (Monday December 12 through Saturday December 17) to pick up Zippy the Snowman.

  Welcome to Camp Ocean, little guppies!
  Mr. Sharky, your snaggle-toothed camp counselor, has planned fish-fact-filled voyage to the bottom of the sea. Learn the ropes: how to puff like a puffer fish, flop like a flounder and fence with a swordfish. You'll search for buried treasure and dive into the mysteries of the ocean, and you might even earn a badge or two. All hands on deck as we get underway for a summer of fun!

1. What is the 2022 Ocean of Possibilities Summer Reading Program? Middletown Thrall Library offers your child the opportunity to beat the "summer reading slide."
   
   The "summer reading slide" is a decline in a child's reading ability during the summer months. Don't let your child or loved one go down the slide! Instead, slide into the library for daily age appropriate fun-filled activities and events! The Library is a place where learning never stops!
2. Our Summer Reading Program will run from Tuesday, July 5, 2022 through Tuesday, August 9, 2022.

A very big THANK YOU to our amazing community!

Our community's support and generosity for the people in the Ukraine has been wonderfully overwhelming!

We have received so many cards and donations that we have to, for now, suspend our donation requests until further notice.

All the items we have received will be tranferred soon to St. Andrew's Ukrainian Catholic Church, and they will be shipping the donations as soon as they can.

Thank you again for your kindness and for helping to make a positive difference in the lives of Ukrainian children and teens.

Homework Help Returns!

Homework Help will be available on

Tuesdays & Wednesdays, 4 pm - 7 pm

starting Tuesday, March 22, 2022 for students in grades 1 through 6.

This program operates on a first-come-first-serve basis.

Each student is entitled to a one-hour session.

There will be NO Homework Help when either the Middletown School District or the Pine Bush School District is CLOSED, or when after-school activities are canceled.

Also: no Homework Help Sessions from April 12-14 (Spring Break)

Homework Help will conclude on Wednesday, June 1, 2022.

Parents, here's what you need to know:

1. Homework help is available on Tuesdays and Wednesdays for grades 1 through 6.
2. Each homework help session will be one hour long.
3. The program will operate on a first-come first-serve basis.
4. Homework Help sessions will be conducted in the Story Time Room with up to three students per table.
5. At the start of each session, students will be directed to a Homework Help instructor.
6. Students must have their own paper, pencils, and any other supplies needed to complete their homework assignment. Due to a limited amount of time, we ask that students be able to identify what assignment they need help with.
7. There is NO Homework Help; when either the Middletown School District or Pine Bush School District is CLOSED or when after-school activities are canceled.
8. No Homework Help Sessions: April 12-14 (Spring Break)
9. Homework Help will conclude on Thursday June 2, 2022.
10. Parents must stay in the building during your child's homework help session.

Cards of Hope

Middletown Thrall Library's Youth Services Dept. is calling on our "Young Community Members" to help Ukrainian Children & Teens!

So, you ask, "How can I help?"

We have the power to make a difference in someone's life! We will create Cards of Hope!


How this works...

1. Please come to our Children's Department and make a card of hope and encouragement for a Ukrainian child or teen. All materials will be supplied!

2. Our Youth Services Department is also accepting the following donations:

• children and/or teen books in English or Ukrainian
• toys
• sleeping bags
• bandages, first-aid supplies, gauze
• clothes (gently used, in good shape, and bagged)

All donations will be dropped off at



From there, all donations will be shipped to Ukraine.

Celebrating Dr. Seuss

It's Dr. Seuss's Birthday on Wednesday March 2, 2022!

African American Book Bundles

Our Youth Services Department will offer African American Book bundles for the month of February 2022.

Book bundles are available for grades 3 through 12.

Each book bundle will contain 4 theme-related books.

Students who write an essay (100 words or more) on something new they have learned from one or all of the books in the bundle will have their names entered in a raffle to win a prize.

There are three categories for raffle prizes:

1. Elementary: grades 3 through 5
2. Junior High: grades 6 through 8
3. High School: grades 9-12

There will also be one CASH Grand Prize!

All essays must be submitted by Friday, February 25, 2022.

One winner from each category will be selected for a raffle prize, and one Grand Prize winner will be selected for best essay!

Winners will be announced Monday, February 28, 2022.

How to get started:

1. Pick-up an age-appropriate book bundle.
(You must have an active library card to borrow books.)
2. Essay submission deadline: Friday, February 25, 2022.
3. Winners will be announced on Monday, February 28, 2020.

Early Literacy Adventures!

Tails & Tales Early Literacy Adventures will focus on PRINT AWARENESS.

"Print awareness" provides your child with the foundation to become a successful reader!

What you need to know...
1. Event dates: Wednesdays on July 7, 21, and August 4.
2. Ages 3 through 6
3. Registration is required. Registration begins Monday, June 7. Each session will be personalized with a Children's Librarian. Four (4) or less per family can attend a session.

Each session runs for 30 minutes. At the time of registration you will set up a time for your child to attend an interactive and engaging story time. Please don't wait to register - space is limited!

Dungeons & Dragons

A Tale of Two Towns

Starting Wednesday, June 16, 2021, 7 - 8 pm

Presented by HMGS Next Gen, Inc., 2021 Role-play Gaming Summer Institute

Join us, if you dare! Each gaming session will read like a story, with players taking an active part in building the narrative through their decisions, ideas, and other thoughts.
This free course is designed for students who want to have fun with peers, explore role-play gaming, and be part of one of the fastest growing genres in gaming today!
In signing up, students will...

• A. Learn how to play D&D.
• B. Play in "4" 2-3 hour gaming sessions spread out over 6 weeks.
• C. Learn to collaborate, make decisions, and work as part of a team.
• D. Develop tools and skills that can carry over into the classroom.
• E. Above all else, HAVE FUN!

Mentoring the program will be Jared Fishman, a history teacher and game-based learning specialist from the Hackley School in Tarrytown, NY. He is also the co-founder and director of HMGS Next Gen, Inc, and teaches game- based learning courses throughout the year. Games will be conducted by a college-aged student with vast experience in running role-play games for other students.

We will crochet a Key Chain Ear Bud Holder. The best part is the yarn and pattern will be provided FREE to you when you register.

Easter

Easter is the most important holiday on the Christian calendar and has been observed from the earliest days of the church.

You ask where did the word Easter come from?

According to the 2021 edition of The Old Farmer's Almanac, it's unclear on the origin of the word Easter.

The word Easter may have come from the Anglo-Saxon dawn goddess Eostre, whose feasts were celebrated each spring at about this time.

Did You Know?

Saint Patrick

According to The Old Farmer's Almanac 2021 edition, there really was a Saint Patrick!

St. Patrick was born in Britain as Maewyn Succat. As a young teen Maewyn was kidnapped from his home on the west coast and taken to Ireland to become a slave who worked as a shepherd.

After six long years as a slave Maewyn escaped. Upon returning home, Maewyn received his call (in a dream) to preach the gospel.

Maewyn spent the next 15 years or so in a Monastery ( a place where Monks live under religious vows) preparing for his missionary work. When Maewyn became a priest his name was changed to Patricius and, eventually to Patrick.

Saint Patrick is credited to have spread Christianity throughout the land and put into existence an organized church.

Shamrock

Do you know why we wear the shamrock on St. Patrick's Day?

Legend says St. Patrick used its three leaves to explain the Holy Trinity [The Trinity is the Father, the Son, and the Spirit as three divine persons who are one divine being (God).]

However, there is no record that Saint Patrick actually used the shamrock as a teaching tool.

DST

What is (DST) Daylight Saving Time?

DST is the practice of changing clocks forward one hour from Standard time during the summer months. The idea behind DST is it allows as to make better use of natural daylight.

According to the Old Farmer's Almanac, Daylight Saving Time began around 1792.

So, what's the short history on Daylight Saving Time?

Benjamin Franklin is often credited with having come up with the idea of Daylight Saving Time as a joke in 1784.

George Hudson came up with the concept in 1885 but was ridiculed for the idea.

In 1907, William Willett proposed a system in a pamphlet "The Waste of Daylight."

The Germans were the first to officially adopt the light-extending system in 1915 as a fuel saving measure in World War I.

The United States Congress passed in 1918 the Standard Time Act which created our time zones and the United States adopted the light-extending system.

This story time can help keep your child engaged and interested in reading and learning!

We will focus on Phonological Awareness, Letter Knowledge, Print Awareness, and the skills needed to help your child to become a superb reader!

These mystery book bundles are pre-selected and carefully prepared by our Children's Dept. librarians.

Each batch will include three titles on African Americans who have made contributions to our world.

We offer two different age-appropriate bundles:

1. Early Learner Bundle: ages 6 years old - 8 years old
2. Book Buddy Bundle: ages 8 years old - 12 years old

Children who check out a Book Bundle will receive a FREE gift!

1000 points required to complete each program.

The Summer Reading Program is divided into 3 different age groups:

• Pre-k (under 1 years old - 4 years old)
• Children's, (5 years old - 12 years old)
• Teen (13 years old - 17 years old).

1. Pre-K 2020 Imagine Your Story Summer Reading Program

Ages: Under 1 years old through 4 years old
One book equals = 25 points
One online program/Mission= 25 points
One ebook = 25 points
One audiobook = 25 points
One magazine = 25 points (magazines should be logged in as a book)
Total Daily Maximum Points 300

2. Children's 2020 Imagine Your Story Summer Reading Program

Ages: 5 years old through 12 years old
One book equals = 25 points
One online program/Mission= 25 points
One ebook = 25 points
One audiobook = 25 points

3. Teen 2020 Imagine Your Story Summer Reading Program

The 2020 Summer Reading Program participants will be able to log reading materials starting Monday July 6, 2020.

The last to day to log your reading materials and online programs/Missions to receive points is Sunday August 9, 2020.

You Must Call (845) 341-5470 to register for ALL online programs.

You can register for online programs Monday through Friday 9:30 am - 4:30 pm.

Completion of the Summer Reading Program requires 1000 points however,participants are encouraged to Complete more than a 1000 points to be entered in a raffle to win a special gift.

Soaring with the Birds!

On March 4, 2020, our "Explorers" Story Time group (which meets on Wednesdays at 10:15am - 10:45am) enjoyed a very special event!

As we concluded, a special guest from Golben Farms brought in a live Mourning Dove!

Attendees were able to pet the bird and identify aspects of the bird which we learned earlier.

Participants in this event also built their very own bird nests!

We're delighted they enjoyed this program at the library, and we congratulate them on their creations!

   Have you ever dreamed of creating or designing your very own scarf, hat, or sweater? If so, learn from the masters! Lu specializes in crochet projects and Betsy specializes in knitting. For beginners, we offer one-on-one instruction.

   For children ages 18 months through 35 months. This Story Time focuses on literacy through stories and play. At this stage in your toddler's life he or she is happiest playing alongside rather than with other children. "First Step" encourages independent play as well as social skills with other toddlers in a safe environment.

2. "Explorers" Story Time & Craft

1. Cooking it Up: Back to School with Healthy Snacks!

   Saturday, September 21, 2019, 11 AM - 12 Noon
   Young library patrons will learn how to prepare healthy snacks, including basic safe kitchen and food prep skills. Participants will get to prepare three tasty and healthy snacks (ham & pineapple tidbits, banana dippers, and apple slice donuts). For ages: 8-13. Registration required and begins on Wednesday, September 11, 2019.

2. Ghoulish Treats for Halloween!

   Saturday, October 26, 2019, 11 AM -12 Noon
   Participants will learn basic safe kitchen and food prep skills as we prepare not-so-scary eats (bloodshot eyeballs, bloody punch, and mini eye-popping pops). For ages: 8-13. Registration required and begins on Monday, October 7, 2019.

3. Give Thanks for Super Spuds!

   Saturday, November 16, 2019, 11 AM - 12 Noon
   Participants will learn basic safe kitchen and food prep skills, and how to prepare basic baked potatoes. Set up toppings as well (grated cheese, bacon bits, sour cream, butter substitute, steamed broccoli, scallions, and flavored cream cheese). For ages 8 - 13. Registration required and begins on Monday, October 28, 2019.

4. Celebrating the Holidays with Tasty Doughnuts!

   Saturday, December 7, 2019, 11 AM - 12 Noon
   Participants will learn basic safe kitchen/food prep skills, as we prepare quick and easy fried donuts using an electric skillet. We will make a glaze to drizzle over the warm doughnuts, then decorate with seasonal sprinkles or shake in a bag with powdered sugar or cinnamon & sugar. following cleanup, we'll enjoy eating yummy creations! For ages: 8-13. Registration required, and begins on Monday, November 18, 2019.

• Have you ever dreamed of creating or designing your very own scarf, hat, or sweater? If so, learn from the masters! Lu specializes in crochet projects and Betsy specializes in knitting projects. Math Enrichment Program

Registration for all grades begins on Monday, July 22, 2019.

Participants, please select the grade you will attend this fall:

• Grades 1 - 3:

  We will focus on addition, multiplication, and solving basic word problems. Ages: 6 - 8. Starting: Tuesday, August 13, 2019. When: Tuesdays & Thursdays, 3 - 4:30 pm (August 13, 15, 20, 22, 27, 29). Registration required. Space is limited. Registered participants must attend all sessions. Anyone missing a session will be dropped from the program. This program concludes Thursday, August 29, 2019.

• Grades 4, 5, 6:

  We will develop a greater understanding of multiplication, fractions, and word problems. Ages: 9 - 11. Starting: Tuesday, August 13, 2018. When: Tuesdays & Thursdays, 5 - 6:30 pm (August 13, 15, 20, 22, 27, 29). Registration is required and space is limited. This program concludes on Thursday, August 29, 2019.

• Grades 7 & 8:

  Learn to manually graph linear equations on graph paper, check work using a graphing calculator, and how to graph quadratic equations. Starting: Monday, August 12, 2019. When: Mondays & Wednesdays, 3 pm - 4:30pm (August 12 ,14, 19, 21, 26, 28). Registration required. Space is limited. Registered participants must attend all sessions. Anyone missing a session will be dropped from the program. This program concludes Wednesday, August 28, 2019.

• Grades 9 & 10:

  Learn to use the sine rule, cosine rule, and tangent rule (and their inverses), how to manually graph linear equations on graph paper. We will review the Pythagorean Theorem, right triangle geometry, quadratic equations, and learn to check work using a graphing calculator. Starting: Monday, August 12, 2019. When: Mondays & Wednesdays, 5 - 6:30 pm (August 12 ,14, 19, 21, 26, 28). Registration required. Space is limited. Registered participants must attend all sessions. Marie Segares has been hooked on crochet since she learned from her grandmother when she was 9, and she conquered her fear of knitting in 2010. In addition to designing, Marie is a professional member of the Crochet Guild of America and is a Digital Content Creator member of the Association for Creative Industries. Beyond teaching crochet and knitting in her hometown of New York City, Marie has also taught at the Finger Lakes Fiber Festival, The North Jersey Fiber Arts Festival, and the Pittsburgh Knit & Crochet Festival.

A Very Special Story Time

with Children's Author Bryan Collier

About the Presenter: "Bryan Collier grew up in Pocomoke, Maryland, on the lower Eastern Shore of the state, the youngest of six children. His interest in art started early. 'At home and at school, I was encouraged to read. I remember the first books with pictures that I read by myself were The Snow Day by Ezra Jack Keats and Harold and the Purple Crayon by Crockett Johnson. I liked the stories, but I really liked the pictures.' As a teenager he began to paint the world around him - the bay, ducks, water, and marshland. His interest in art was always encouraged both at home and at school. He began to develop a unique style of painting that incorporated both watercolors and collage. 'Collage is more than just an art style. Collage is all about bringing different elements together. Once you form a sensibility about connection, how different elements relate to each other, you deepen your understanding of yourself and others.' In 1985 Bryan won first place in a Congressional Competition, and his art was displayed in the Capitol Building in Washington D.C. Later that year he was awarded a scholarship to Pratt Institute in New York City through their national talent competition. In 1989 Bryan graduated with honors from Pratt Institute with a bachelor of fine arts degree. While attending school in New York, Bryan began to volunteer at the Harlem Horizon Studio and Harlem Hospital Center with a program that provides working space and materials for self-taught artists in the community. He went on to become the Program Director, a position he held for 12 years. Bryan still works with the program in Harlem as a volunteer, feeling a deep sense of responsibility to be a positive role model for kids. 'It gives the community, the schools, the kids, and the parents the opportunity to come together for a very positive uplifting cause - the building and re-building of self-esteem, teaching the appreciation of art, and keeping the kids connected and involved and away from negative influences.' Meanwhile, he made the decision to focus his time and attention on illustrating children's books full time. It wasn't easy getting his art published in books; Bryan tried for seven years before he got his break with the publication of his book, Uptown. Today Bryan spends his time working on his book illustrations, creating his own studio pieces, and going into classrooms to talk with teachers, librarians, and students about books and art. 'I get so much from those school visits. With the books I've been doing, I have this amazing opportunity to bring my art and the process of making artwork and books into the classroom. I ask the students to talk to me and talk to each other about how they feel and what their own experiences are. Basically I ask them to tell their own story. Then I ask them to tell their own story through art'."

2018 Late Summer Events

August 2018

Math Enrichment Program

• Grades 1 through 3: We will focus on addition facts, multiplication facts, and solving basic word problems. For ages: 6-8. Starting: Tuesday, August 14, 2018. When: Tuesdays & Thursdays, 3- 4:30 pm (August 14, 16, 21, 23, 28 & 30). Registration is required and space is limited. Registration begins on Monday, July 30. Children who are registered are required to attend all sessions. If your child misses a session, your child will be dropped from the program. This program will conclude on Thursday, August 30, 2018.
• Grades 4, 5, 6: We will focus on a greater understanding of multiplication, fractions, and word problems. For ages: 9-11. Starting: Tuesday August 14, 2018. When: Tuesdays & Thursdays, 5 pm - 6:30 pm (August 14, 16, 21, 23, 28 & 30). Registration is required and space is limited. The program will conclude on Thursday, August 30, 2018.
• Grades 7 & 8: (participants should be entering 7th or 8th grade in the fall): We will learn to manually graph linear equations on graph paper, learn how to check our work using a graphing calculator, and how to graph quadratic equations. Starting: Monday, August 13, 2018. When: Mondays & Wednesdays 3 pm - 4:30 pm (August 13, 15, 20, 22, 27, 29). Registration is required and space is limited. Registration begins Monday, July 30. Children who are registered are required to attend all sessions. If your child misses a session, your child will be dropped from the program. The program will conclude on Wednesday, August 29, 2018.
• Grades: 9 & 10: (participants should be entering 9th or 10th grade in the fall): Using the sine, cosine, and tangent rules (and their inverses), we will learn to find all side lengths and angles of any triangle with only minimal information! Starting: Monday, August 13, 2018. When: Mondays & Wednesdays 5 pm - 6:30 pm (August 13, 15, 20, 22, 27, 29). Registration is required and space is limited. Registration begins on Monday, July 30. Children who are registered are required to attend all sessions. If your child misses a session your child will be dropped from the program. The program will conclude on Wednesday August 29, 2018.

Sharon Silverman will lead a FREE workshop introducing us to Tunisian crochet.

"Ms. Silverman has written 11 crochet books and is an instructor for Annie's Online Classes."

This will help cover: a pattern design from Ms. Silverman, yarn, and light refreshments.

Bhangra

Thursday July 26, 2018, 4 pm - 5:30 pm

in the 2nd Floor Community Room at Middletown Thrall Library

LIBRARIES ROCK! with Bhangra [bahng-gruh]. Bhangra is a folk dance and music from the Punjab region of India (northwestern India and northeastern Pakistan).

This is a wonderful opportunity for families to experience and learn about Bhangra, Indian costumes, and Indian vegetarian cooking secrets as well as tasty samples.

Participants will go home with recipes to re-create these fantastic dishes at home.

This is a FREE family event. Space is limited so, don't delay!

100 New Children's Books!

Middletown Thrall Library's Youth Services Dept. has just received a gift of 100 new children's books, ranging from pre-kindergarten through early readers.

These books were a donation from the Brownstone Book Fund, a private foundation in New York City interested in fostering early reading, a love of books, and encouraging parents and children to read together.

Please come to visit our Children's Library to explore and enjoy our new collection!
