MIDDLE: c1911 post card view of Academy Avenue Park, where Middletown celebrated inoxiration as a city on July 4, 1888. In the background is the old high school which stood where Academy Avenue School is today. The park was originally the site of two cemeteries; the Little Cemetery established 1840 and the South Middletown Cemetery established 1848. The bodies were removed to Hillside Cemetery in the early 1880s and a park constructed according to plans prepared by Vaux & Co. Calvert Vaux (1824 - 1895) was a famous architect who co-designed Central Park in New York City. The band stand in the park was built in 1886. The park was popular for many years.
