deed was signed June 19, 1986. At this time (July 1988) the building is under construction. In May, 1986, the remainder of the Wilson Field property off Dolson Avenue was sold. It was last used in the fall of 1980, replaced by the field at the High School on Gardner Avenue. Ownership of the former Phoenix fire house on John Street was transferred to the Orange County Chamber of Commerce. June 30th. In July, the city began removing the awnings put up on North Street in the early 1970's to change downtown's appearance.
Going back nearly six years ago, a small group began meeting to plan a celebration for Middletown's incorporation as a city. Dick Foote and Dan Johnson were co-chairmen until Dan became our Mayor. many were the nights when only a few people showed up but Dick Kept saying things would pick up. He was right. Since Middletown technically became a city on June 29th, 1888, a ceremony was held in Academy Avenue Park (where the original celebration was held July 4th, 1888). An historic marker was dedicated. A small gazebo, reminiscent of the band stand placed in the park in 1886, was placed in the park in June.
On July 4th, 19988, Middletown celebrated its 100th anniversary of incorporation as a city with a great parade. Fireworks, the most spectacular display in the city's history, were held that evening at the Middletown Psychiatric Center.
