CARPET BAG FACTORY (Ayres & Galloway Hardware, North Street): 'The large brick building on North Street, corner of Roberts Street, was erected 1843 as a warehouse. For a time, it was Hiram Kain & Co., who manufactured carriages and sleighs. In late 1852, it was sold to Matthews & Hunt, makers of carpet bags. In 1908, it was sold by the Matthews family to Ayres & Galloway Hardware who have occupied it since, and celebrate their 100th year of business in 1988. The above photo was taken c1868. Below is a view of the building in 1985 (photo by Peter Laskaris).
