Middletown Thrall Library Presents Its December 2015 Remarkable Reads Selection...

The School of Essential Ingredients

by Erica Bauermeister

A Book Discussion with Matt Pfisterer

Tuesday, December 1, 2015, 3 PM

at Middletown Thrall Library, in our 2nd floor Community Room.

Free refreshments to be served!

About the book (from the publisher's description): "Reminiscent of Chocolat and Like Water for Chocolate, a gorgeously written novel about life, love, and the magic of food. The School of Essential Ingredients follows the lives of eight students who gather in Lillian's Restaurant every Monday night for cooking class. It soon becomes clear, however, that each one seeks a recipe for something beyond the kitchen. Students include Claire, a young mother struggling with the demands of her family; Antonia, an Italian kitchen designer learning to adapt to life in America; and Tom, a widower mourning the loss of his wife to breast cancer. Chef Lillian, a woman whose connection with food is both soulful and exacting, helps them to create dishes whose flavor and techniques expand beyond the restaurant and into the secret corners of her students' lives. One by one the students are transformed by the aromas, flavors, and textures of Lillian's food, including a white-on-white cake that prompts wistful reflections on the sweet fragility of love and a peppery heirloom tomato sauce that seems to spark one romance but end another. Brought together by the power of food and companionship, the lives of the characters mingle and intertwine, united by the revealing nature of what can be created in the kitchen."

Middletown Thrall Library Presents Its September 2015 Remarkable Reads Selection...

10% Happier

by Dan Harris

A Book Discussion with Matt Pfisterer

Tuesday, Sept. 29, 2015, 3 PM

at Middletown Thrall Library, in our 2nd floor Community Room.

Free refreshments to be served!

About the book (from the publisher's description): "Winner of the 2014 Living Now Book Award for Inspirational Memoir Nightline anchor Dan Harris embarks on an unexpected, hilarious, and deeply skeptical odyssey through the strange worlds of spirituality and self-help, and discovers a way to get happier that is truly achievable. After having a nationally televised panic attack on Good Morning America, Dan Harris knew he had to make some changes. A lifelong nonbeliever, he found himself on a bizarre adventure, involving a disgraced pastor, a mysterious self-help guru, and a gaggle of brain scientists. Eventually, Harris realized that the source of his problems was the very thing he always thought was his greatest asset: the incessant, insatiable voice in his head, which had both propelled him through the ranks of a hyper-competitive business and also led him to make the profoundly stupid decisions that provoked his on-air freak-out. We all have a voice in our head. It's what has us losing our temper unnecessarily, checking our email compulsively, eating when we're not hungry, and fixating on the past and the future at the expense of the present. Most of us would assume we're stuck with this voice - that there's nothing we can do to rein it in - but Harris stumbled upon an effective way to do just that."

He left a life of comfort to seek a spiritual union with the world. A motion picture that celebrates the timeless joy of original innocence, Brother Sun, Sister Moon is an uncommonly rewarding and meaningful film experience."

Middletown Thrall Library Presents Its August 2015 Remarkable Reads Selection...

The Matchmaker

by Elin Hilderbrand

A Book Discussion with Matt Pfisterer

Tuesday, August 25, 2015, 3 PM

at Middletown Thrall Library, in our 2nd floor Community Room.

Free refreshments to be served!

About the book (from the publisher's description): "48-year-old Nantucketer Dabney Kimball Beech has always had a gift for matchmaking. Some call her ability mystical, while others - like her husband, celebrated economist John Boxmiller Beech, and her daughter, Agnes, who is clearly engaged to the wrong man - call it meddlesome, but there's no arguing with her results: with 42 happy couples to her credit and all of them still together, Dabney has never been wrong about romance. Never, that is, except in the case of herself and Clendenin Hughes, the green-eyed boy who took her heart with him long ago when he left the island to pursue his dream of becoming a journalist. Now, after spending 27 years on the other side of the world, Clen is back on Nantucket, and Dabney has never felt so confused, or so alive. But when tragedy threatens her own second chance, Dabney must face the choices she's made and share painful secrets with her family. Determined to make use of her gift before it's too late, she sets out to find perfect matches for those she loves most. The Matchmaker is a heartbreaking story about losing and finding love, even as you're running out of time."

Middletown Thrall Library Presents Its July 2015 Remarkable Reads Selection...

The Rosie Project

by Graeme Simsion

A Book Discussion with Matt Pfisterer

Tuesday, July 28, 2015, 1 PM

at Middletown Thrall Library, in our 2nd floor Community Room.

Free refreshments to be served!

About the book (from the publisher's description): "Don Tillman, professor of genetics, has never been on a second date. He is a man who can count all his friends on the fingers of one hand, whose lifelong difficulty with social rituals has convinced him that he is simply not wired for romance. So when an acquaintance informs him that he would make a 'wonderful' husband, his first reaction is shock. Yet he must concede to the statistical probability that there is someone for everyone, and he embarks upon The Wife Project. In the orderly, evidence-based manner with which he approaches all things, Don sets out to find the perfect partner. She will be punctual and logical -- most definitely not a barmaid, a smoker, a drinker, or a late-arriver . . . yet Rosie Jarman is all these things. She is also beguiling, fiery, intelligent -- and on a quest of her own. She is looking for her biological father, a search that a certain DNA expert might be able to help her with. Don's Wife Project takes a back burner to the Father Project and an unlikely relationship blooms, forcing the scientifically minded geneticist to confront the spontaneous whirlwind that is Rosie -- and the realization that love is not always what looks good on paper.""

The sons of Old Brenner, the village patriarch who holds the entire community under his threatening, violent ways, would have chased him away if Greider hadn't given them a fistful of gold coins. Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World that Can't Stop Talking

by Susan Cain

A Book Discussion with Matt Pfisterer

Tuesday, June 23, 2015, 3 PM

at Middletown Thrall Library, in our 2nd floor Community Room.

Free refreshments to be served!

About the book (from the publisher's description): "Passionately argued, impressively researched, and filled with indelible stories of real people, Quiet shows how dramatically we undervalue introverts, and how much we lose in doing so. Taking the reader on a journey from Dale Carnegie's birthplace to Harvard Business School, from a Tony Robbins seminar to an evangelical megachurch, Susan Cain charts the rise of the Extrovert Ideal in the twentieth century and explores its far-reaching effects. She talks to Asian-American students who feel alienated from the brash, backslapping atmosphere of American schools. She questions the dominant values of American business culture, where forced collaboration can stand in the way of innovation, and where the leadership potential of introverts is often overlooked. And she draws on cutting-edge research in psychology and neuroscience to reveal the surprising differences between extroverts and introverts."

Green Fields of America

A Performance by The Time Travelers

Wednesday, June 3, 2015, 6 - 8 PM

in the 2nd Floor Community Room at Middletown Thrall Library

The Time Travelers - traditional storyteller and fiddler Joe McHugh and his wife Paula McHugh, banjoist and artist - take their audiences on a fascinating journey back to the folkways of the early pioneers, the heady days of the California Gold Rush, the courage and heartbreak of the Civil War, the building of the railroads, and the hard knocks and saving humor of the Dust Bowl and Great Depression.

Along the way they introduce a host of colorful characters: gusty trailblazers to gun-toting railroad bulls, madcap adventurers to makers of moonshine - and a restless ghost to quicken the pulse.

History comes alive in this unique performance that weaves together storytelling and folk music with projected images of original artwork inspired by the titles of early American and Celtic fiddle tunes!

Tender Is the Night

A Book Discussion with Jenny Binnie

January 28, 2015, 3 PM

at Middletown Thrall Library, in our 2nd floor Community Room.

Free refreshments to be served!

About the book (from the publisher's description): "Set in the South of France in the decade after World War I, Tender Is the Night is the story of a brilliant and magnetic psychiatrist named Dick Diver; the bewitching, wealthy, and dangerously unstable mental patient, Nicole, who becomes his wife; and the beautiful, harrowing ten-year pas de deux they act out along the border between sanity and madness. In Tender Is the Night, Fitzgerald deliberately set out to write the most ambitious and far-reaching novel of his career, experimenting radically with narrative conventions of chronology and point of view and drawing on early breakthroughs in psychiatry to enrich his account of the makeup and breakdown of character and culture. Tender Is the Night is also the most intensely, even painfully, autobiographical of Fitzgerald's novels; it smolders with a dark, bitter vitality because it is so utterly true."
