Middletown Thrall Library Presents Its Next
Remarkable Reads Selection...
It Was Me All Along: A Memoir
by Andie Mitchell
A Book Discussion with Matt Pfisterer
Tuesday, Dec. 6, 2016, 3 PM
at Middletown Thrall Library, in our 2nd floor Community Room.
About the book (from the publisher's description): "A heartbreakingly honest, endearing memoir of incredible weight loss by a young food blogger who battles body image issues and overcomes food addiction to find self-acceptance. All her life, Andie Mitchell had eaten lustily and mindlessly. Food was her babysitter, her best friend, her confidant, and it provided a refuge from her fractured family. But when she stepped on the scale on her twentieth birthday and it registered a shocking 268 pounds, she knew she had to change the way she thought about food and herself; that her life was at stake. It Was Me All Along takes Andie from working class Boston to the romantic streets of Rome, from morbidly obese to half her size, from seeking comfort in anything that came cream-filled and two-to-a-pack to finding balance in exquisite (but modest) bowls of handmade pasta. This story is about much more than a woman who loves food and abhors her body. It is about someone who made changes when her situation seemed too far gone and how she discovered balance in an off-kilter world. More than anything, though, it is the story of her finding beauty in acceptance and learning to love all parts of herself."
Free copies of this book are available for borrowing or reserving at Middletown Thrall Library!

Remarkable Reads Selection...
Spontaneous Happiness
by Andrew Weil
A Book Discussion with Matt Pfisterer
Tuesday, Oct. 25, 2016, 3 PM
at Middletown Thrall Library, in our 2nd floor Community Room.
About the book (from the publisher's description): "Everyone wants to be happy. But what does that really mean? Increasingly, scientific evidence shows us that true satisfaction and well-being come only from within. Dr. Andrew Weil has proven that the best way to maintain optimum physical health is to draw on both conventional and alternative medicine. Now, in Spontaneous Happiness, he gives us the foundation for attaining and sustaining optimum emotional health. Rooted in Dr. Weil's pioneering work in integrative medicine, the book suggests a reinterpretation of the notion of happiness, discusses the limitations of the biomedical model in treating depression, and elaborates on the inseparability of body and mind. Dr. Weil offers an array of scientifically proven strategies from Eastern and Western psychology to counteract low mood and enhance contentment, comfort, resilience, serenity, and emotional balance. Drawn from psychotherapy, mindfulness training, Buddhist psychology, nutritional science, and more, these strategies include body-oriented therapies to support emotional wellness, techniques for managing stress and anxiety and changing mental habits that keep us stuck in negative patterns, and advice on developing a spiritual dimension in our lives. Lastly, Dr. Weil presents an eight-week program that can be customized according to specific needs, with short- and long-term advice on nutrition, exercise, supplements, environment, lifestyle, and much more. Whether you are struggling with depression or simply want to feel happier, Dr. Weil's revolutionary approach will shift the paradigm of emotional health and help you achieve greater contentment in your life."

Thomas Jefferson
A Book Talk with Professor Robert McDonald, U.S. Military Academy,
and author of Confounding Father: Thomas Jefferson's Image in His Own Time
Wednesday, October 26, 2016, 6 - 7 PM
in the 2nd Floor Community Room at Middletown Thrall Library
From the Author: "Of all the founding fathers, Thomas Jefferson stood out as the most controversial and confounding. Loved and hated, revered and reviled, during his lifetime he served as a lightning rod for dispute. Few major figures in American history provoked such a polarization of public opinion.
Whoever thinks that the current presidential election is the ugliest in history needs to think again. Presidential elections involving Thomas Jefferson-1796, 1800, and 1804-- generated a level of intensity and heat never seen before or since. While his supporters hoped that he'd restore the promise of the American Revolution, his opponents feared he'd import to America the bloodshed and radicalism of the French Revolution.
With so much seemingly at stake, and with neither side recognizing the patriotism and good intentions of the other, some saw Jefferson as the 'friend and benefactor of the whole human race' while others considered him 'the most detestable of mankind.'"
This event is free and open to the public.

There are people who want to hear her story. They want to know what it was like living with that man. She can tell them that there were secrets. There always are in a marriage. David and Goliath: Underdogs, Misfits, and the Art of Battling Giants
by Malcolm Gladwell
A Book Discussion with Matt Pfisterer
Tuesday, May 31, 2016, 3 PM
at Middletown Thrall Library, in our 2nd floor Community Room.
Free refreshments to be served!
About the book (from the publisher's description): "We all know that underdogs can win -- that's what the David versus Goliath legend tells us, and we've seen it with our own eyes. Or have we? In David and Goliath, Malcolm Gladwell, with his unparalleled ability to grasp connections others miss, uncovers the hidden rules that shape the balance between the weak and the mighty, the powerful and the dispossessed. Gladwell examines the battlefields of Northern Ireland and Vietnam, takes us into the minds of cancer researchers and civil rights leaders, and digs into the dynamics of successful and unsuccessful classrooms all in an attempt to demonstrate how fundamentally we misunderstand the true meaning of advantages and disadvantages. When is a traumatic childhood a good thing? When does a disability leave someone better off? Do you really want your child to go to the best school he or she can get into? Why are the childhoods of people at the top of one profession after another marked by deprivation and struggle?"

Yes Please
by Amy Poehler
A Book Discussion with Matt Pfisterer
Tuesday, March 29, 2016, 3 PM
at Middletown Thrall Library, in our 2nd floor Community Room.
Free refreshments to be served!
About the book (from the publisher's description): "IN A PERFECT WORLD... We'd get to hang out with Amy Poehler, watching dumb movies, listening to music, and swapping tales about our coworkers and difficult childhoods. Because in a perfect world, we'd all be friends with Amy - someone who seems so fun, is full of interesting stories, tells great jokes, and offers plenty of advice and wisdom (the useful kind, not the annoying kind you didn't ask for, anyway). Unfortunately, between her Golden Globe-winning role on Parks and Recreation, work as a producer and director, place as one of the most beloved SNL alumni and cofounder of the Upright Citizens Brigade, involvement with the website Smart Girls at the Party, frequent turns as acting double for Meryl Streep, and her other gig as the mom of two young sons, she's not available for movie night. Luckily, we have the next best thing: Yes Please, Amy's hilarious and candid book. A collection of stories, thoughts, ideas, lists, and haiku from the mind of one of our most beloved entertainers, Yes Please offers Amy's thoughts on everything from her 'too safe' childhood outside of Boston to her early days in New York City, her ideas about Hollywood and 'the biz,' the demon that looks back at all of us in the mirror, and her joy at being told she has a 'face for wigs.' Yes Please is a chock-full of words and wisdom to live by."
Free copies of this book are available for borrowing or reserving at Middletown Thrall Library!
Please follow this link to search the library catalog for this book.

About the book (from the publisher's description): "Her name was Henrietta Lacks, but scientists know her as HeLa. She was a poor black tobacco farmer whose cells -- taken without her knowledge in 1951 --became one of the most important tools in medicine, vital for developing the polio vaccine, cloning, gene mapping, and more. Henrietta's cells have been bought and sold by the billions, yet she remains virtually unknown, and her family can't afford health insurance. This phenomenal New York Times bestseller tells a riveting story of the collision between ethics, race, and medicine; of scientific discovery and faith healing; and of a daughter consumed with questions about the mother she never knew."
