Middletown Thrall Library Presents Its Next Remarkable Reads Selection...

The Storied Life of A. J. Fikry

by Gabrielle Zevin

A Book Discussion with Matt Pfisterer

Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2017, 3 PM

at Middletown Thrall Library, in our 2nd floor Community Room.

About the book (from the publisher's description): "In the spirit of The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society and The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry, Gabrielle Zevin s enchanting novel is a love letter to the world of books - and booksellers - that changes our lives by giving us the stories that open our hearts and enlighten our minds. On the faded Island Books sign hanging over the porch of the Victorian cottage is the motto "No Man Is an Island; Every Book Is a World." A. J. Fikry, the irascible owner, is about to discover just what that truly means. A. J. Fikry s life is not at all what he expected it to be…. As surprising as it is moving, The Storied Life of A. J. Fikry is an unforgettable tale of transformation and second chances, an irresistible affirmation of why we read, and why we love."

Middletown Thrall Library Presents Its Next Remarkable Reads Selection...

The Paris Wife

by Paula McLain

A Book Discussion with Matt Pfisterer

Wednesday, Nov. 1, 2017, 3 PM

at Middletown Thrall Library, in our 2nd floor Community Room.

About the book (from the publisher's description): "A deeply evocative story of ambition and betrayal, The Paris Wife captures a remarkable period of time and a love affair between two unforgettable people: Ernest Hemingway and his wife Hadley. Though deeply in love, the Hemingways are ill-prepared for the hard-drinking and fast-living life of Jazz Age Paris, which hardly values traditional notions of family and monogamy. Surrounded by beautiful women and competing egos, Ernest struggles to find the voice that will earn him a place in history, pouring all the richness and intensity of his life with Hadley and their circle of friends into the novel that will become The Sun Also Rises. The Paris Wife is all the more poignant because we know that, in the end, Hemingway wrote that he would rather have died than fallen in love with anyone but Hadley."

The Underground Railroad

by Colson Whitehead

A Book Discussion with Matt Pfisterer

Wednesday, June 28, 2017, 3 PM

at Middletown Thrall Library, in our 2nd floor Community Room.

About the book (from the publisher's description): "From prize-winning, bestselling author Colson Whitehead, a magnificent tour de force chronicling a young slave's adventures as she makes a desperate bid for freedom in the antebellum South. Cora is a slave on a cotton plantation in Georgia. Life is hell for all the slaves, but especially bad for Cora; an outcast even among her fellow Africans, she is coming into womanhood where even greater pain awaits. When Caesar, a recent arrival from Virginia, tells her about the Underground Railroad, they decide to take a terrifying risk and escape. In Whitehead s ingenious conception, the Underground Railroad is no mere metaphor engineers and conductors operate a secret network of tracks and tunnels beneath the Southern soil. Cora and Caesar's first stop is South Carolina, in a city that initially seems like a haven. But the city's placid surface masks an insidious scheme designed for its black denizens. And even worse: Ridgeway, the relentless slave catcher, is close on their heels. Forced to flee again, Cora embarks on a harrowing flight, state by state, seeking true freedom."

The Guest Room

by Chris Bohjalian

A Book Discussion with Matt Pfisterer

Wednesday, May 31, 2017, 3 PM

at Middletown Thrall Library, in our 2nd floor Community Room.

About the book (from the publisher's description): "From the New York Times bestselling author of Midwives and The Sandcastle Girls comes the spellbinding tale of a party gone horribly wrong: two men lie dead in a suburban living room, two women are on the run from police, and a marriage is ripping apart at the seams. When Kristin Chapman agrees to let her husband, Richard, host his brother's bachelor party, she expects a certain amount of debauchery. She brings their young daughter to Manhattan for the evening, leaving her Westchester home to the men and their hired entertainment. What she does not expect is this: bacchanalian drunkenness, her husband sharing a dangerously intimate moment in the guest room, and two women stabbing and killing their Russian bodyguards before driving off into the night. In the aftermath, Kristin and Richard's life rapidly spirals into nightmare. The police throw them out of their home, now a crime scene, Richard's investment banking firm puts him on indefinite leave, and Kristin is unsure if she can forgive her husband for the moment he shared with a dark-haired girl in the guest room. But the dark-haired girl, Alexandra, faces a much graver danger. In one breathless, violent night, she is free, running to escape the police who will arrest her and the gangsters who will kill her in a heartbeat. A captivating, chilling story about shame and scandal, The Guest Room is a riveting novel from one of our greatest storytellers."

Meet Local Author

Marianne Sciucco

discussing her latest novel

Swim Season

Tuesday, May 9, 6 PM

in the 2nd floor Community Room at Middletown Thrall Library

About the Book:
"Champion swimmer Aerin Keane is ready to give up her dreams of college swimming and a shot at the Olympics. As she starts senior year in her third high school, Aerin's determined to leave her family troubles behind and be like all the other girls at Two Rivers. She's got a new image and a new attitude. She doesn't want to win anymore. She's swimming for fun, no longer the freak who wins every race, every title, only to find herself alone. But when her desire to be just one of the girls collides with her desire to be the best Two Rivers has ever seen, will Aerin sacrifice her new friendships to break a longstanding school record that comes with a $50,000 scholarship?"

About the Author:
"During swim season, you can find Swim Mom Marianne Sciucco at one of many Skyline Conference swim meets, cheering for her daughter Allison and the Mount Saint Mary College Knights. All those long hours sitting on cold, metal bleachers inspired her to write Swim Season, a young adult novel about the new girl on the team who challenges a longstanding school record. Sciucco is not a nurse who writes but a writer who happens to be a nurse.

A lover of words and books, she dreamed of becoming an author when she grew up but became a nurse to avoid poverty. She later brought her two passions together and writes about the intricate lives of people struggling with health and family issues.

Her debut novel Blue Hydrangeas, an Alzheimer's love story, is a Kindle bestseller; IndieReader Approved; a BookWorks featured book; and a Library Journal Self-e Selection. She also has two short stories available on Kindle, Ino's Love and Collection.

A native Bostonian, Marianne lives in New York's Hudson Valley, and when not writing works as a campus nurse at a community college. She enjoys books, the beach, and craft beer, preferably all at the same time."

Singer / Songwriter / Composer / Improvisationalist / Artist

Charlie Lang

Thursday, April 27, 2017, 6 PM

Please join us for an inspiring evening of original songs and musical improvisation.

This event is FREE and open to the public.

About Charlie Lange

From the Performer Himself:

Improvisation is the act of making things up as you go along and knitting them all together to express the feelings in one's heart. All throughout my life I have been improvising music on the piano.

My mind takes little pictures and images of things I've made up. These stills are then played back in all different orders in a single performance in motion pictures. I go with my best images of what I want to play, and I use my heart to regroup them.

I started playing Billy Joel's finest songs at age 9. Later, I heard The Kohn Concert by Keith Jarrett at age 12 and began improvising.

Musicians I like include Jim Croce, James Tayler, Billy and Elton, The Beatles, Joni Mitchell, Miles Davis, Stravinsky, Eric Satie, Frank Zappa, also close friends' music, the music of Mike Ciliberto, Mark Davenport, Brad Scribner, and all the other songwriters and performers in the Hudson Valley.

In past performances, I played three years at 88 Charles Street, Montgomery, NY (2006-2009), two years at Christie's Restaurant in Westtown, NY (1992,1993), Copley Plaza in Boston, and elsewhere. I was the Music Director for David Cohen's Theatre Improvisation troupe (1994) and the Music Director for Martin Moss (1983).

I have composed many original songs, many versions of those songs, and have recorded three albums: Walking through Portraits, Turn the Music On, and FREE, all privately funded.

I also enjoy exploring visual media. My art is surrealistic impressionism. I am a Colorist. My favorite artists include Picasso, Matisse (love cutouts) Pollack, and Basquiat.

You can listen to some of my most recent original songs and improvisations at: www.soundcloud.com/chazlang.

You can also catch some glimpses of Charlie Lang's art in our flyer for this event.

A selection of Charlie's artworks will be on exhibit in the library in the future.

The Book of Unknown Americans

by Cristina Henriquez

A Book Discussion with Matt Pfisterer

Tuesday, March 28, 2017, 3 PM

at Middletown Thrall Library, in our 2nd floor Community Room.

About the book (from the publisher's description): "When fifteen-year-old Maribel Rivera sustains a terrible injury, the Riveras leave behind a comfortable life in Mexico and risk everything to come to the United States so that Maribel can have the care she needs. Once they arrive, it's not long before Maribel attracts the attention of Mayor Toro, the son of one of their new neighbors, who sees a kindred spirit in this beautiful, damaged outsider. Their love story sets in motion events that will have profound repercussions for everyone involved. Here Henriquez seamlessly interweaves the story of these star-crossed lovers, and of the Rivera and Toro families, with the testimonials of men and women who have come to the United States from all over Latin America. The Book of Unknown Americans is a stunning novel of hopes and dreams, guilt and love - a book that offers a resonant new definition of what it means to be American."

Modern Romance

by Aziz Ansari

A Book Discussion with Matt Pfisterer

Tuesday, February 28, 2017, 3 PM

at Middletown Thrall Library, in our 2nd floor Community Room.

About the book (from the publisher's description): "For years, Aziz Ansari has been aiming his comic insight at modern romance, but for Modern Romance, the book, he decided he needed to take things to another level. He teamed up with NYU sociologist Eric Klinenberg and designed a massive research project, including hundreds of interviews and focus groups conducted everywhere from Tokyo to Buenos Aires to Wichita. They analyzed behavioral data and surveys and created their own online research forum on Reddit, which drew thousands of messages. They enlisted the world's leading social scientists, including Eli Finkel, Helen Fisher, Sheena Iyengar, Barry Schwartz, Sherry Turkle, and Robb Willer. The result is unlike any social science or humor book we've seen before."

Fates and Furies

by Lauren Groff

A Book Discussion with Matt Pfisterer

Wednesday, January 25, 2017, 3 PM

at Middletown Thrall Library, in our 2nd floor Community Room.

About the book (from the publisher's description): "From the award-winning, New York Times- bestselling author of The Monsters of Templeton and Arcadia , one of the most anticipated books of the fall: an exhilarating novel about marriage, creativity, art, and perception. Fates and Furies is a literary masterpiece that defies expectation. A dazzling examination of a marriage, it is also a portrait of creative partnership written by one of the best writers of her generation. Every story has two sides. Every relationship has two perspectives. And sometimes, it turns out, the key to a great marriage is not its truths but its secrets. At the core of this rich, expansive, layered novel, Lauren Groff presents the story of one such marriage over the course of twenty-four years. At age twenty-two, Lotto and Mathilde are tall, glamorous, madly in love, and destined for greatness. A decade later, their marriage is still the envy of their friends, but with an electric thrill we understand that things are even more complicated and remarkable than they have seemed. With stunning revelations and multiple threads, and in prose that is vibrantly alive and original, Groff delivers a deeply satisfying novel about love, art, creativity, and power that is unlike anything that has come before it. Profound, surprising, propulsive, and emotionally riveting, it stirs both the mind and the heart."
